Universities Create Collaborative Campuses with SAP® Campus Management Solution
University of Mississippi, University of Montevideo, and University of Basel Deploy New Campus Management Student Administration System from SAP
ATLANTA, Ga. - October 02, 2002 - SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced that three higher-education institutions are among the first to go live on the campus management student administration system from mySAP™ Higher Education & Research. In addition, SAP announced that Central Michigan University, the first U.S. university to go live with SAP’s core enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution in 1998, recently licensed the campus management system to create seamless transactions across departments and to optimize its existing SAP platform. The announcement was made at the EDUCAUSE 2002 Annual Conference, an information technology exhibition for higher education institutions, held in Atlanta, Georgia, October 1-4.
The University of Mississippi in the United States, the University of Montevideo in Uruguay, and the University of Basel in Switzerland have all implemented the campus management system as part of a complete solution of integrated software tools that automate administrative and financial processes. Campus management functionality for higher education efficiently combines university procedures with integrated business processes that enable self-service among students, alumni, employees, and administrators. Capabilities include student application processing, comprehensive functions for academic curriculum development, and e-learning.
“SAP is uniquely qualified to provide institutions of higher learning the integration and openness of the collaborative business environment delivered by SAP technology,” said Tom Shirk, senior vice president, Public Services, SAP AG. “Our campus management system is designed to address the distinct requirements of university life, such as student registration, classroom studies, and e-learning, maximizing resources and automating procedures that were once manual. Campus Management from SAP uses the latest tools and technology available to steer institutions into the new educational millennium.”
Many higher education institutions use in-house systems or niche products that span only isolated portions of their business processes. mySAP Higher Education & Research is a complete and robust solution that addresses business requirements while integrating information from different organizational and functional systems. Campus management capabilities deliver end-to-end functionality while managing all aspects of a transaction between current, prospective, and former students within the university.
Campuses Across the Globe Collaborate with SAP
The University of Mississippi, “Ole Miss” as it is commonly known, partnered with SAP to support the university’s mission to provide student-friendly service and accurate information through teamwork and innovation. The implementation of the campus management capabilities at the University of Mississippi enhance the university’s existing mySAP™ Human Resources (mySAP HR) and mySAP™ Financials solutions, which have been in place since 2000. The campus management system is tied to the current SAP administrative systems and will electronically manage all aspects of student life from admissions to graduation. This puts accurate student information at the center of a powerful technology environment spanning departments across the campus.
“We are pleased with the campus management functionality currently in place and look forward to its complete implementation early next year,” said Buster Hale, associate vice chancellor of information technology. “Ole Miss is committed to remaining one of America’s great public universities, and the campus management system from SAP will help to ensure our ongoing success.” Hale will showcase the university’s approach to the implementation, including a demonstration of its online academic structure, at the EDUCAUSE conference. The academic structure to be exhibited includes the ability to submit an admission application and fee online. This initial deployment will serve as the foundation for the remaining campus management functionality to support course selection, degree requirements, and related academic services.
Other institutions increasing the value they derive from current SAP solutions by adding campus management functionality include the University of Montevideo, the first institution in Latin America to install mySAP Higher Education & Research. The deployment of the campus management solution from SAP places the university at the cutting edge of management technology around the world. Home to approximately 2,000 students and multiple learning centers, the University of Montevideo is using the campus management system to enable quick and easy access to student files, including administrative, financial, and academic records, allowing for more informed decision making.
“We’ve experienced a significant growth in our student population and needed a flexible solution that would allow us to expand and enhance the services we provide,” said Diego Moreira, SAP project manager and head of the IT Department. “Campus management provides the scalability and real-time access we need for both the student and administrative processes.”
Specifically, the University of Montevideo is using campus management capabilities to manage economic and financial cycles such as billing, collecting, and the awarding of grants. The campus management system supports tasks such as the periodic scheduling of study plans and human resource management, thereby streamlining the daily decision-making process.
The University of Basel is one of ten institutions in the Swiss Education & Research Network. In Switzerland, every university must use technology to improve the management of student data. The University of Basel selected SAP to help it redesign internal processes by integrating student data with financial systems. The process improvements that campus management delivers are key to controlling expenses at the university.
“We needed a technology solution that could seamlessly integrate our administrative systems and ensure consistent business processes across the university system,” said Elsa Sutter, campus management project manager and head of student services. “SAP’s campus management capabilities eliminate physical boundaries and enhance communication.”
