SAP Receives PennFuture Green Power Award for Sustainable Practices

SAP NEWSBYTE - September 11, 2009 - Public-interest organization Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future (PennFuture) has recognized SAP AG with a “Green Power” award for sustainable practices at the company’s Newtown Square, Pa., North American headquarters campus. The award, presented at a ceremony in Philadelphia on September 10, recognized SAP for its annual purchase of 19 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of wind-generated Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for its Newtown Square location and its pursuit of the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum status for its recent headquarters expansion. The wind-energy purchase offsets more than 80 percent of the electricity needs of the campus and reduces SAP’s carbon footprint by more than 22,000 tons. This effort supports SAP’s aggressive carbon reduction target of going back to year-2000 levels by 2020, representing a nearly 50 percent reduction from SAP's 2007 carbon emissions (see “SAP Increases Focus on Sustainable Business”). The purchase of 19 million kWh of wind-generated RECs is equivalent to the output of approximately five 1.5 megawatt modern wind turbines.

In 2009, SAP announced an increased strategic focus on sustainability, which includes both managing its internal operations in a sustainable way and delivering solutions that support its customers’ sustainable business practices. Worldwide, SAP is committed to incorporating sustainability into its corporate facilities. Other recent examples of this include the installation of solar panels and purchase of renewable energy at its Palo Alto, Calif., location and the construction of a LEED Gold-certified SAP Labs building in Brazil.
